Seth Tobocman is a radical comic book artist who lives in Manhattan's Lower East Side. He has been an influential propagandist for the squatting, anti-globalist and anti-war movements in the United States. Tobocman is best known for his creation of the political comic book 'World War 3 Illustrated'.
“If the U.S. is viewed from the air, it is impossible to believe there is a housing shortage. We see a landscape crowded with man made structures. And yet housing is many American's biggest economic problem. It is an entirely artificial problem of the capitalist system. Coming to New York to be an artist, and desiring to be involved in countercultural activism, I have been over and over drawn in to housing struggles. First in maintaining my own status as a rent stabilized tenant. Then on behalf of squatters and homeless people, then in rebuilding the homes of people in New Orleans. Most recently in dealing with the financial crisis created by housing foreclosures. I have worked with many different groups on these issues: The Lower East Side Squatters Eviction Watch, Tent City, Housing Solidarity Network, More Gardens, Common Ground, Organize for Occupation, Metropolitan Council on Housing, Occupy Wall Street, National Peoples action, to name a few. Today, we evaluate things in terms of their environmental impact. We may soon have to give up private cars and personal computers. But there is no carbon footprint to placing people in buildings that already exist. There is no reason people in the industrialized world have to be homeless.”
